“Before the Sun Rises is such a beautiful opening into creating a deep relationship with the beings in nature we share this Earth with. To learn their language is an ancient call of all shamans. Gwendolyn Morgan knows the language of nature and gracefully blesses all of life with not just her words, but the powerful vibration and energy that fills her words. Her work is brilliant!!”
–Sandra Ingerman, award-winning author of The Book of Ceremony
“Gwendolyn Morgan’s latest collection of poems are ripened seeds of eloquence. An exquisite intimacy appears in these pages, wrought of fierce reverence and a throaty faithfulness to the breathing, sentient world. These poems carry wide-eyed wonder and the medicine of protest. These are the works of someone in deep accord with the song of the earth.”
–Francis Weller, author of The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal
“Deep veins of beauty run through Before the Sun Rises, like quartz veins in a stone—cedars and hemlocks, raccoons and owls, and ten thousand other wild things. But veins of suffering run beside them, illnesses of body, society, and mind. Gwendolyn Morgan’s poetry is like sunlight cast upon the stone. It does what poetry ought to do: through illumination and revelation, it heals.”
–Jason Kirkey, author of The Taste of Water and Stone
“Sure-footed, Morgan’s poems deliver blessings of gravity and grace. If you think time is merely linear, she helps you awaken to something mysterious, whole and dear. If you believe yourself at a distance from earth’s wildness, a single poem can dispel that illusion, opening your intuitive heart to living connections. If you still imagine courage and justice could mend a broken world, these poems say without a doubt: yes.”
–John Fox, author of Finding What You Didn’t Lose
“Before the Sun Rises takes us into the deeper currents of natural and human landscapes, gracing our heart and unbolting our mind. Sharing encounters with crows and deer, cancer and refugees, Morgan once again gifts us with powerful cascading images, compassionately illuminating challenging realities of modern life. Each poem is a revelation, an inspiration, a reminder of the sacredness of every moment and every being.”
–Stephanie Austin, Ecoastrology
“Gwendolyn Morgan juxtaposes the wild glory of the natural world with humankind’s horrors. There is a richness of insight and quiet humility. The poet doesn’t profess to know all the answers—only presents us with vivid moments in time, personal experience, acute observation, sacred presence. The book is both beautiful and arresting.”
