Homebound Publications | Publish & Tips on Our Current Tastes

In General: We publish 10-12 full-length works a year. We accept the following styles: creative non-fiction, literary fiction, travel writing, skill & trade books, and essay collections. We are a royalty-based publisher. Our authors do not subsidize the publication of their book in any way.

Poetry Submissions: We can only accept unsolicited poetry submissions via our annual Homebound Publications Poetry Prize. If you are interested in submitting a poetry manuscript to us we suggest you do so via this avenue.

Fiction Submissions: We can only accept unsolicited fiction submissions via our annual Landmark Prize for Fiction. If you are interested in submitting a poetry manuscript to us we suggest you do so via this avenue.

Little Bound Books Series: Small Books, Bold Words – Homebound Publications’ chapbook series. Through this series, we intend to release literary works of both fiction and creative nonfiction that carry a punch. At just 5x7 they are the perfect size to throw in your bag or tuck in a pocket and take with you.

Editor’s Note on Tone and Direction: We are seeking titles with special focus on spirituality, education, regional interest, history, personal growth, self-help, and ecological. (We have a soft spot for books about our native region of New England.) Authors representative of the work we seek would be: Barry Lopez, Joanna Macy, Gary Snyder, David Abram, Mary Oliver, Rainer Maria Rilke, Annie Dillard, David Whyte, Cheryl Strayed, Jack Kerouac, Walt Whitman, and Henry David Thoreau.

Themes We Look For:
  • Spirituality
  • Personal growth
  • Buddhism, Mindfulness
  • Sustainable practices
  • Environment, Conservation, Rewilding
  • Introspective travel writing
  • Well-researched educational books writing on spiritual practices or culture.

Do you publish emerging authors?

We get this question a great deal. The answer is yes, we do indeed publish emerging authors. We work closely with our authors so when considering submissions the quality of the author’s character is just as important as the quality of the manuscript. We look for individuals with a strong work ethic, passion, and integrity. We would rather work with a first-time author who is full of passion and drive than a well-established author who has lost her/his enthusiasm for the craft. Bottom-line: We want passionate, dedicated authors who understand not only the art of writing but the business of being a writer.

Our Books

Our books are available worldwide, distributed by Midpoint Trade Books (and through them Ingram, Baker & Taylor, etc). We publish in paperback, hardcover and e-book. Our audio editions are available on iTunes, Amazon, and Audible.com

Our Business Philosophy

So often in this age of commerce, entertainment supersedes growth; books of lesser integrity but higher marketability are chosen over those with much-needed truth but small audiences. Homebound focuses on the quality of the truth and insight present within an author’s writing before any other considerations. We seek books written by soul-oriented individuals putting forth their works in an effort to restore depth, highlight truth and improve the quality of living for their readers.

Our Respect for Authors

Every Editor in Homebound is also a working writer, as such we respect an author’s voice. We always like to ensure that our authors are pleased with the final product. Working under this philosophy, we involve our authors in the interior/cover design process.

Do you publish books from authors outside the USA?

At this time we only accept proposals from authors residing in the United States or the United Kingdom. While our titles are available worldwide, we simply don’t have the network to accept projects from others countries in the global community at this time. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. In time, we hope to be in a position to open ourselves to proposals from writers residing in other countries.

Putting Together Your Proposal

Although we appreciate hearing from our readers and prospective authors, postal mail requires a lot of packaging, paper mailing materials and fossil fuel to ship. In an effort to cut down on paper usage/waste, at present prefer electronic submissions sent to us via our secure platform with Submittable.  {It is free to open an account to submit your work. You can even sign in via your Facebook account.}

A Few Things to Know

If you wish to submit to Homebound Publications, please read the following summary:

  • We actively contract and support authors who tour, read and perform their work, play an active part of the contemporary literary scene, and seek a readership.
  • We sell books to authors at wholesale discount and these copies may be sold direct to consumers at readings and events.
  • We do produce media kits, posters, sell sheets, postcards, catalogs and other promotional material at our own expense.
  • We do not pay advances.
  • We retain full control over all aspects of design, including the text and the cover, including cover illustrations. We do allow authors to be involved in the design process but it is a collaborative design process.
  • We do not organize author tours or act as agents.
  • We seek manuscripts that are no more than 80,000 words.
  • We do organize single events with bookstores/venues with which we have good relationships.
  • We expect our authors to be active participants in marketing their title. You should be prepared to assist in a wide range of marketing practices, including social networking sites and blogs.
  • We are happy to receive submissions that have been sent simultaneously to other publishers (i.e. multiple submissions are acceptable).
  • No materials will be returned to the author or editor, please do not send precious or irreplaceable materials.

All rules are made to be broken but it is important that authors understand the basics of publishing.

Response Time

We usually respond to within 4-6 months. (We do have express submission options for those who can’t wait that length of time.)

The submitted manuscript should be previously unpublished. A limited number of excerpts may have appeared in print or online, but the author must hold sole rights to the work.

We look forward to reading your work!
